How long have you been working in this industry for now?
I finished the course in September 2013 and launched at the start of 2014. I am now in my fifth wedding season!
What geographical area do you cover?
My main clientele is based in Scarborough and close surrounding areas; however, I do travel through North Yorkshire and Humberside.
What was your motivation to start a career working as an MUA in the bridal sector & Why did you choose BAMM as your place to study?
I have always been very artistic, I loved art in school and college but I never really knew what I wanted to do so I completed courses based on my liked and interests. In my last year of beauty therapy, I was entered into a makeup competition and got to the national finals, I loved every minute of it which lead to my tutor telling me this is what I had to do. I did lots of research for the right course but, at this point, I had been in colleges for four years, and I just wanted to get stuck in. I found it so difficult to find somewhere local, so I widened my search (over 260 miles away!) and found BAMM. I travelled down from Yorkshire to meet Melanie, and she convinced me this was what I was meant to be doing! A few months later I was on the fashion, bridal and beauty makeup course at BAMM. It was perfect, an intense course (with only myself an one other at the time) for ten weekends over the summer.
One of the main reasons I decided to invest in this career was because of Melanie. I remember instantly knowing the bridal industry was for me because of my natural style, and Melanie encouraged this, by giving me the support, knowledge and confidence to book a wedding and know I could do a good job.
It has truly been the best decision I have ever made!
Do you have a particular Makeup Style or clientele? & What do you believe is your unique selling point that makes you the brides choice?
Over the last five years, as I have developed my portfolio, I believe my style is what attracts clients to choose me as well as the recommendations!
My whole style and brand is natural, from how I apply makeup, the makeup I choose for my kit, my personal makeup and my online profile. I do not believe in changing someone’s appearance to make them unrecognisable. I love natural beauty. Natural fresh makeup that allows them to look and feel themselves, enhancing and defining their features to create a timeless look that they will still adore in years to come.
What do you like the most about being an MUA in the Bridal industry?
Being a bridal makeup artist is so rewarding. I love the whole process, from meeting the brides, chatting about their plans, sharing and understanding their vision, to being there on the day to help bring the whole look together.
What would say is the most important skill when providing Makeup services for weddings? & What advice would you give to others wishing to become a Bridal Makeup Artist?
Having confidence in yourself is so important. The bride has booked you for many reasons, your style, portfolio, reviews, price, social media presence, but mainly for your skills and knowledge. They are trusting you to listen to their ideas and thoughts, and to create a makeup look that they will love and know will stay put throughout their wedding day. So I believe being proactive with your own development as an artist is key.
