Prosthetics and Special FX Makeup Course

The Prosthetics and Special FX Makeup Course is ideal for anyone wanting to enter the exciting world of Special FX and Prosthetics for film, TV and theatre.

The Course

The course is open to everyone, whether you’re an experienced makeup artist wanting to expand your skill set, or have no previous experience and want to develop new skills. It is also taught as a module within the Peter King TV & Film Makeup course.

The course is taught by the renowned Darren Longthorne whose skills and expertise have taken him across all genres of the entertainment industry. His credits in film and television include Thor, The Dark World, Star Wars Attack Of The Clones, Wrath of the Titans, Granada TV’s Coronation Street, A&E, Blue Murder, BBC drama Bodies, C4′s Shameless and the BBC’s Body Farm. There is nothing this man can’t create!

Week 1

  • Health and safety
  • Using alginate
  • Plaster bandage
  • Casting and finishing in plaster
  • Casualty effects- black eyes, broken nose, split lip, scabs, spots and blisters
  • Bullets wounds – entry and exits
  • Stitching a wound
  • Burns makeup – 1st,2nd, and 3rd degree scaring
  • Silicon prosthetic piece application

Week 2

  • Face casting, including making and applying a bald cap
  • Tools and equipment
  • Sculpting, moulding assorted wounds and scars
  • Casting wounds in gelatine
  • Painting and application
  • Creation of a prop (severed finger)
  • Casting in alginate and the production of a two-part mould
  • Casting prop finger in silicon and gelatine
  • Painting silicon and gelatine

Week 3

  • Burns makeup – 1st,2nd, and 3rd degree scaring
  • Silicon prosthetic piece application
  • Designing your final project
  • Research and begin sculpture
  • Creation of your final project from your own design… including Sculpture, mould making, casting in silicon, latex, gelatine, finishing and painting
