Melanie Crump is the founder and Academy Principal of the Bath Academy of Media Makeup. Born and raised in Bath, Melanie left home as a teenager to train as a Makeup Artist in London. Since 2002 she has worked successfully in many fields of the media; Television Drama, Fashion, Entertainment, Music, News, Sport and Current affairs. Having quickly realized her potential in the industry, and making many key contacts through her professional and driven work ethic, she soon turned her attention to her second dream; creating an elite training facility for aspiring Makeup Artists in her hometown of Bath. Set in the centre of a stunning heritage city with a strong connection to the creative industries, Bath itself has been the historical backdrop for many great television dramas and films such as The Duchess (2008), War Horse (2011) and Les Miserables (2013). Melanie herself was fortunate to find a wonderful location for BAMM, in the centre of the City close to the famous Royal Crescent, where she set about commissioning purpose built studios in the beautiful neo-gothic Christchurch Mews. The facilities within were designed by Melanie, to reflect as accurately as possible, the make up rooms that she herself spent so many years becoming familiar with, and create a professional, comfortable and realistic learning environment for her students.
Key to Melanie’s vision was creating a strong and diverse roster of tutors; active specialists in their chosen fields of media makeup, inspirational and passionate about their work and bringing their skills and artistry to another generation of Makeup Artists. None more so than Peter King, who joined Melanie in late 2012, becoming a creative driving force for the Academy. Until this point the South West wasn’t able to offer a centre of excellence in Makeup Artistry like BAMM. Now the region’s first dedicated makeup school is providing a ‘professional and complete’ facility for training in Media Makeup Artistry…with the bonus that the experience is based in one of the most beautiful parts of England, and an exceptional alternative to London. Further to this Melanie is determined that each of BAMM’s students go on to fulfil their potential in the industry, and has continued forging links for placements and trainee opportunities in every area possible.
“For me this has to be one of the best careers in the world. To succeed you need passion, determination, stamina ..and great personal skills”Melanie
