Sarah is in our current crop of students on the Peter King Television & Film Makeup Course. She is one of a number of women who have come to us for a career change and, from what we’ve seen so far, she’s destined for great things!
Having a mid-life career change is not an easy choice, it can be risky, but I was never the sort of person to shy away from a challenge!
At the time I was contemplating a career change, I was 40 years old, in a full-time job (as a Holistic Therapist) and saving to buy my own house. I’d always been creative and had previously graduated with a degree in Art and Design and worked as a graphic designer. After living abroad for a few years, I returned to the U.K. and completed courses in beauty therapy and massage. It was at this time that I first met BAMM’s Principal and Creative Director, Melanie Crump. She was judging a makeup competition that I competed in. I’d always loved makeup but had only practised different looks on myself, worked briefly on a department store makeup counter and had countless makeovers at MAC- where I’d pick up lots of great tips! These experiences planted the seed and at the end of last year, I decided to go for it and start saving to do a course at BAMM.
I attended an open day in February, then enrolled on the Peter King Film and TV Makeup course straight after, to start in September. I felt inspired to finally pursue a career in makeup and have an exciting and varied life doing something I love. I gave up my job as a therapist in August and I haven’t looked back.
My first month at BAMM has been brilliant and intense. We have so much new information to digest, but it’s been exciting and fun. The class size is small, allowing for plenty of time with the tutors, and it consists of a varied age range. The tuition and support is second to none with tutors who are actively working in the industry themselves. Their advice is invaluable and they are always encouraging us to achieve our goals and reach our full potential.
The course content covers everything from special FX and prosthetics to period hair and wig work, character and theatrical makeup to body art- allowing you a taste of everything with a view to deciding which area to specialise in. Even the business side of makeup artistry (something that is overlooked on many other courses) is covered.
With so much still to look forward to (including a total of 8 professional photo-shoots to build our portfolios and a work placement with Oscar-winning makeup artist and BAMM’s Creative Director: Peter King, on his latest film) this course is an amazing opportunity- teaching us everything we need to know to get started and succeed.
So for anyone, like myself, who is thinking about a career change and who is maybe a bit older but unsure about taking the plunge… just do it! Dream big, make it happen, its never too late.
